Are gay marriage rights really about equal rights or just getting revenge on the religious? I have one gay friend who says he wants gay marriage because he wants equal rights. I suggested why not lobby congress to make "civil unions" EQUAL 100% in rights to marriage? It would be easier to get the average american to support and he would get his equal rights. He said this was unacceptable and would only settle for "Marriage" rights. It sounds to me he is more interested in taking something away from people of religion rather than actually obtaining equal rights. Is this the opinion of most gays or is he in the minority? Your thoughts? |
Your either/or is incorrect. Let me explain. You say "is this the opinion of most gays or is he in the minority?" That assumes that his desire for "marriage" rights is "revenge on the religious". But it's not. It has nothing to do with the religious. "The religious" are the only ones making it about religion. Our country is supposed to have a separation of church and state, so marriage laws (a state affair) should not be affected by religion. That's why gays should be allowed to get married. Whether their church (if they're religious) allows it or not, they should be allowed to get legally married and get any benefits that come with that.
I wasn't married in a religious context. My marriage was not "ordained by God" or anything. As a straight person, I wanted to get married, not civil union-ed. If I were gay, I'd want the same thing. |
Why is McCain ignoring that Romney & the Mormon Church is seeking to overturn gay marriage rights? . . . and the initiative on the presidential ballot (Proposition 8), that the Mormons are promoting in their churches, like just last Sunday with their memo from their President Monson?
I though non-profit churches were not suppose to have anything to do with politics, and that they are not suppose to send out political memos and political letters to their congregations. Looks like the Mormons are going to try and squash the marriage rights of gay and lesbians in California, and the Republicans are helping them.
Interesting stuff. |
| i am hopping McCain pick Romney for his VP it would sure mean more trouble for McCain campaign . |
Why are they keep switching gay marriage rights in CA? I don't live in California and I'm not gay, but the only thing I don't get is why are they keep switching gay marriage rights there?
Also.
If people are already married when it was legal, are they still legally married today, sense its now illegal? |
It is an ongoing legal battle. I can't believe something as fundamental as the right to marry even has made it as far as a ballot!
The people who were married in the window of time when it was legal to be married are still recognized as a married couple. |
Equal rights for gay unions vs straight marriage is the same as gay marriage right? If the gay population had the same rights to a union as a straight marriage couple but was not called a marriage would this be considered fair and equal? Same rights different name! Honest and direct answers only no jokes and anger. |
So, "separate but equal?"
That didn't work out so well in Brown v. Board of Education (1954). The idea there was that black people would be "treated just as equally as whites, but separately." The problem was that separate was not equal.
Even if you could somehow give gay people the same rights as straights but call it something else (Good luck with the IRS tax code part of that alone.... Whole thing would need to be rewritten: deductions, fringe benefits allowances for spousal support, etc, etc, etc), there will still be people who will point and say that gay people aren't married.... Therefore they must be inferior. After all, if they were just as good as straight marriages, then we'd just call them married. There's an implied looking-down-your-nose at someone when you say they can't be called the same thing as you.
There is a pervasive history of prejudice against gays in the United States. It's so pervasive that gay soldiers in the military can be gay, but can't say they are gay: "don't ask; don't tell." This policy suffers from the same irrational basis as any policy separating civil unions from marriage. There is no possible reason we should support "don't ask; don't tell."
There is no evidence that gay soldiers cause problems. Quite the opposite, every country in NATO has allowed gays to serve openly in their military except the U.S. and Turkey. The U.S. threw over 10,000 gay soldiers out of the armed forces from 2001 to 2008. This at at time when we are disparate for more troops. There are no more troops. We've run through the national guard. We've forced soldiers to serve years longer than their contracted terms ("stop loss") We're allowing people with medical problems and criminal records into the army. We need those 10,000 troops, badly, but we won't let them serve because they're gay. That's patently insane.... These men are willing to die for your freedom and they're told they aren't good enough to do so for being gay. How are we not offended by this policy? More importantly, why aren't you?
The same irrational prejudices are behind the notion to separate marriage and civil unions. Gay's aren't allowed to give blood, they can be fired from certain jobs with no legal consequences all because people think they aren't good enough.
In sum, not allowing gays to call themselves married is an implied insult. You know or should know that there are lots of people in the U.S. who will not look at Civil Unions the same as Marriages. They will look down at Gay civil unions the same way they have looked down at black schools, housing, busing, and even bibles (yes bibles were segregated). It's happened once and it will happen again if we let it.
America is the only country that openly and notoriously celebrates its prejudice by proposing constitutional amendments to deny an entire class of people their basic human rights (UN. Declaration of human rights article 16). It was called "The Federal Marriage Amendment."
Think about that, a government sponsored form of prejudice for an entire class of individuals. Do you really want to live in a country that draws arbitrary lines like that? What will happen if you are ever on the wrong side of that kind of line in the future?
Despite my tone, I have the utmost respect for America. It was a country founded on noble principals that everyone could be equal under the law. I do so wish we would live up to the principals so many gave up everything for.... |
What approach is Barrack Obama taking against the gay marriage rights? I am asking this only because recently in a few of the American states there was an gay marriage right proposal. If they should or should notmake it legal to have gay marriage. In Connecticut it is now legal to same sex marriage which is to me personally disturbing. To have people marry their opposite sex is where it all begins. People marry other people like they should, its a issue all around the news now, im just suprised some states are for it. |
I don't know, but I hope this is ONE thing he will stand against, as he said he was against it. That would help to bring the sensible people and himself together, being one step closer.
Gay marriage is insane, and so is every single person who supports it. Gays ALREADY HAVE the same identical rights as everyone else, and they're not entitled to a ridiculous, elitist special right such as this, to change all of our society.
1 MAN + 1 WOMAN = MARRIAGE |
What rights will Gay Marriage take away from Heterosexual couples? I've seen this argument many times as an argument against Gay Marriage, but I have never, ever seen specifically which rights Gay Marriage would take away from Heterosexual couples. Can anyone enlighten me?
. |
| I don't know the rights... however it diminishes the legitimacy of a true marriage between a man and woman. Once homosexuals are allowed to legally marry... what's the next step. Man and animal? If you believe this is ludicrous then what do you think people 40 or 50 years ago thought of the possibility of a same sex marriage? In 40 or 50 years from now after the lines have been completely blurred... Do you fido take Nancy to be your non-species partner? Bark Bark |

What do you call people against gay marriage rights? I'm writting a paper for my American Politics class about same sex marriage and I don't know what to call opponents to gay marriage...
For abortion it's pro-choice, and pro-life.

Have gay marriage rights changed in the United States in the last 10 years? I know the Lawrence V Texas decision was pretty important but has a gay couple's dynamic really changed? |
| Well, several of the Eastern seaboard states have legalized marriage. It's coming but it's going to happen slowly. just like the civil rights of the 60's. You can't keep a whole group of people down forever. And, making gays pay their taxes while depriving them of their full rights as a citizen equals taxation without representation which is illegal. So, see, there are a lot of things in the mix here and it will ebb and flow but in the end we will prevail. After all, one of the reasons people came to the country of America in the first place was to escape religous persecution, so why should we have to tolerate that here just because a few zealots are trying desperatly to live everyone elses life for them? Good question love... |
